About Maria Alomar

My name is Maria Alomar, originally from Mallorca, Spain, and currently residing in Ireland.

My artistic body explores the themes of humanity and culture, looking for the point of unity or commonality between human feelings and experiences. I believe that art has the power to connect people through emotion and mutual understanding.  In a globalized world, I choose to focus on tradition,  and how people carry heritage during these modern times.

I delve into the feelings of the individual, removed from their civilization where the lifestyle, values and beliefs learned take on another meaning in a new context, or lose value completely. Displacement forces the individual to question roots and identity. My practice is a reflection of my personal experience living in a different country from the one I grew up in, describing my feelings and emotions as a subject 'removed from my natural habitat'

I am an interdisciplinary artist, mainly focusing on digital photography, painting and experimenting with mixed-media. In addition, I have a special interest videography.

In my practice I put a lot of value in the materials I use, since I consider that they hold and back-up a large part of the narrative. I usually mix materials of organic or traditional origin with more 'globalized' backgrounds, figures, or components.

Education:

Currently finishing a Bachelor of Education in Art and Design Teaching from TUS (Technological University of the Shannon), which takes part at LSAD (Limerick School of Art and Design).

PAINTING & MIXED MEDIA

'Where it Meets'

The  body of "Where it Meets," which was showcased in the exhibition "The Land is Soft" at the People's Museum in Limerick. This Painting and Mixed Media body of work delves deeply into the intricate relationship between humans and the natural world. My artistic exploration revolves around the profound impact of human intervention on the environment and cultural traditions.

In my pieces, I employ a unique combination of grid-like shapes and wall filler—a manmade construction material that mimics natural textures. This visual juxtaposition serves to accentuate the consequences of human intervention on the natural world, creating a powerful contrast that aims to raise awareness of environmental degradation.

My approach aims to capture the essence of cultural identity and its profound influence on our connection to the land. The intention is to ignite a dialogue about the critical importance of preserving both the natural environment and our cultural heritage.

textile & Photography

'Ai, Pageseta'

"Ai, Pageseta," is photography and textile project based on culture and misplacement of culture. This project involved creating a traditional 'pagesa' costume from scratch with typical fabrics from Mallorca. In the photographs I document the process of adaptation, superimposition, confusion and overwhelming that the individual, misplaced and stripped of what he knows, tries to adapt to a new surroundimg.
Each photograph and video clip serves as a visual representation of two cultures colliding and mixing.

'Diary Entries'
Short-films

"Diary Entries," is photography and videography project that unfolded as a an exploration of the human experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. This project involved collecting diverse diary entries from individuals, documenting their fears, moments of sadness, and the things they missed during these challenging times.

Through the lens of my camera, I sought to encapsulate the raw emotions and personal narratives of people navigating the complexities of a world reshaped by the pandemic. Each photograph and video clip serves as a visual representation to the shared struggles, fears, that emerged during this global crisis.
